Unit 1: Fantastic and Strange Brainstorm
This is my brainstorm I made of different aspects and ideas of the Fantastic and Strange photography course. Whilst in this course I have studied Kurt Schwitters machines and objects, Micheal Basanko light graffiti, Justine Reyes face disguise and Hattie Stewart. From doing my brainstorm I have come to a conclusion that I want to do something completely different, whilst I was looking at art2day I came across Allen Klosowski. As you can see I came up with lots of ideas that I can do for the places sector and in the style of Klosowski. I am interested in in his work and how he uses different angles to portray the fact that the viewer of a building can view a building how they want; in their own perspective. Klosowski creates photographs in very creative ways such as using a building to reflect another one and take a photograph, this is what made me interested in his work.
Context for Allen Klosowski:
Allen Klosowski is a photographer that is interested in taking pictures of different perspectives of buildings. His work is very different to other photographers that take pictures of buildings due to the fact that he goes out of the box. For example, in some of his work, some of buildings reflect off other buildings or he will take a picture of a puddle which is reflecting a building. From what I have seen, Klosowski is interested in angles of different buildings. His work can relate to Simon Patterson’s work as it portrays the idea of line and structure. His work links to the environment as buildings are what make the environment. I think Klosowskis intentions are to show that the viewer of a building can view the building how they want, in their own way. Allen Klosowski takes photographs of buildings from many different angles some buildings are reflected, some are taken from beneath, from above, straight ahead this makes us look at them in different ways.

Analysis:
The genre of this photograph is a portrait of a sky scraper building in London. This photograph has a sky scraper in the center that is glass, so it is able to reflect another one. I can see that Klosowski has thought about this photograph due to the fact that he has used one glass sky scraper to reflect another. On the right hand side of this photograph, at the bottom, the building is continued meaning Klosowski has taken it from a unusual angle, at the top, I can see the light blue sky suggesting the photograph was taking around mid-day. On the left hand side of the photograph is the main part of the building, at the bottom I can see that a minute sky scraper has been reflected, at the top is the main building and a little section of the sky. In the center of the photograph is the sky scraper that reflects another one.
Feelings & Mood:
This photograph doesn’t remind of anything specific, the closet thing it reminds me of is visiting the City of London as a young child, sky scrapers like this was a new thing to me when I was young, so it was quite overwhelming. The angle this photograph has been taken from, can relate to the way I saw these buildings as a young child, I say this because Klosowski has clearly taken this photograph by looking upwards, this relates to my perspective because of the comparison between me as a young child and how tall these sky scrapers were, I had to look up in order to see them in whole. The fact that Klosowski has used one building to reflect another, in my opinion is the most interesting area of this photograph and this is the reason why I choose this photograph.
Composition:
The focal point of this Photograph for me is the reflection, this is because it is the most interesting part of the photograph, due to the fact that I believe it is very creative and artistic. The leading line of this picture directs my eyes to the center, this is because it is were the most detail is. I have noticed that this photograph is asymmetrical, I can tell this due to the fact that the photograph has been taken from an unusual angle meaning if you split it down the center the two sides would look completely different, due to the sizes of the buildings and other aspects. The first place the eye looks as I said earlier is at the reflection of the building, this is because it is the most detailed area of the photograph, the second place my eye looks is at the rest of buildings, lastly I look at the sky and the photograph as a whole.
Color & Mood:
The dominant color in this image is charcoal grey and black, this is because the buildings cover the largest area of the photograph, this almost creates a dull mood, but then the right hand corner contrast with the dull color of the building, due to the fact that the color is aquamarine blue and creates a relaxing mood. I don’t believe that Klosowski has used these colors for a specific reason, I say this because the colors don’t suggest that Klosowski is trying to put out a message or mood.
Light & Tone:
The light is coming from above the photograph I can tell this because above the sky scraper buildings is the sky which distributes a large amount of light. The area which is probably the most highlighted area in terms of light is the top right hand corner this is because it is the section which has the most light. The light in this photograph adds a positive relaxing mood, this is because the majority of the photograph is dark due to the color. The light and tone don’t add any weight or depth to the work and there is no dark shadows.
Texture & Pattern:
The texture of this photograph is generally smooth apart from the reflected building, the reflected building has a jagged top, and there is a tiny pattern I say this because main building has lots of different shapes like squares clumped together other than that there is no pattern in this photograph.
What have I learnt?

What have I learnt?
- How to take a photograph of building to portray different perspectives a building can be viewed from
- How to use color to show two different types of mood
Analysis:
This a landscape photograph of a city like road, with cars, people and buildings that Klosowski has taken. I have decided that this photograph was taken in the evening, I can tell this due to the fact the cars headlights are on and the sky looks a little gloomy, in other words dark. On the left hand side of this photograph, at the bottom, there is a taxi and a few people crowded outside a shop or restaurant, at the top, there is an uncommon looking building. In the center of this photograph is a large street, people crossing, quite a few cars in a traffic jam, as I look down the road I can see a street full of sandy colored buildings, at the top is the dark gloomy sky. On the right hand side, at the bottom is the back of another taxi and more people, towards the top there is a building with a rare pattern.
Feelings & Mood:
This photograph reminds me of the city of New York at night, the reason why is because New York is said to be the city that doesn’t go to sleep. From this photograph I can tell that the streets are still fairly busy even though the skies are dark. The fact that Klosowski has taken this photograph in the midst of peoples day to day life, there is no set structure or pattern, I find this interesting because it is like catching someone in an act, so it is more natural instead of planned. I choose this photograph from Klosowski’s collection due to the fact that I can relate to it in terms of having a normal day out in the city, as well as this I find it more interesting that there is not only buildings in the photograph unlike most of Klosowski’s photographs. I find that this photograph is active, what I mean by this is that there is a lot going on.
Composition:
The focal point of this photograph is the center, were there are a few past byers crossing the street and were the most of the cars are. This is because there is a lot of light coming from that area, from the car headlights, also there is a lot going on, cars driving, people crossing etc. The leading lines of this photograph first lead me to the cars and people the center this is due to the fact there is a lot of light suggesting it is the spotlight. This photograph is asymmetrical due to the fact that if you was split the photograph down the center vertically, the two sides would look and be completely different. Again the first place my eyes look is in the center of the photograph this is due to the fact that it is very eventful and bright. Secondly my eyes look to the left hand side of the photograph due to the fact that there are a group of people crowding outside a store, it looks like. Lastly my eyes looks at the photograph as a whole, this is so I can get an overview of what is going on in the photograph. There is no specific shape to the composition I believe this is because the photograph has been taken in the midst of people’s day to day life so nothing has been set out in a certain position.
Color & Mood:
The colors used in this photograph are what I would call muted, I say this because they are far from vibrant and are very dull. Apart from the white speckles from the car headlights, the colors mostly consist of black and grey, almost like the colors you would see on a winter’s night. This almost creates a upsetting mood but the situation contrast with this because it is the norm of a day to day life in the city which moves at a rapid pace unlike an upsetting mood which seems to be moving at a slow depressing mood. The dominant color in this photograph is black and grey, I don’t believe Klosowski did this for a specific reason and if he did it would be to make it clear to the viewer that the photography was taken in the evening.
Light & Tone:
Most of the light in this photograph is coming from the center, from the car head lights and a minute bit from the shops on the left and right hand sides. I can tell this due to the fact that the light is very bright contrastingly to the main color of the photograph, so it makes it easy to spot were the light is coming from. The light from the car headlights highlights the areas around it due to the fact that it is so bright so it is able to stand out. You are able to see a few dark shadows, for example were the people are crossing and the headlights are shinning on them it creates a shadow. The light in the center of the photograph adds depth I say this because it makes it easier to see straight down the street to the see the rest of buildings, the light doesn’t add any weight. The scarcity of light in this photograph creates a dull, unpleasing mood.
Texture & Pattern:
There is no specific pattern to this photograph due to the fact that the scene wasn’t set, it was more taken at random. The texture of the buildings in this photograph seem to be rough and almost corroded.

What I have learnt:
- If you want a photograph to look more natural, do not set it out
- How light can be used to create a certain mood or add depth to a photograph
